I recently compared Mamiya DL-28 system against a 21 megapixel DSLR. I wanted to see for myself how each camera performed under identical lighting conditions with all camera parameters matched (ISO, comparative lens focal length, shutter speed and f-stop). While I expected the DL-28 to surpass the quality of the DSLR, with the megapixel difference relatively small (28 vs. 21) I wasn’t sure exactly how obvious the difference would be.

The night before meeting Lynn Goldsmith I researched her career. Holy Mamiya, Batman! This woman has done everything except walk on the moon. According to Wikipedia, “Lynn Goldsmith is a recording artist, a film director and a celebrity portrait photographer. Her work has appeared on the covers and inside almost any important publication in every country for the past 35 years. She has done over 100 album covers. In addition to her editorial work, Goldsmith has also focused on fine art photography with conceptual images.” If you keep reading, your jaw starts dropping every time you get to a new category i.e. books, awards, education, etc. Suffice it to say I had good reason to be intimidated and didn’t know at all what she would be like in person.

In Kirk Tuck’s writing, he’s talking about the “medium format thing.” In the most recent issue of ProPhotoResource.com Kirk takes the DSLR vs. medium format war to the ultimate battleground: the client. With a boxful of 13×19 “C” prints under his arm, Kirk sallies forth to some of the most high-priced art directors in town (Austin, TX) with photos taken by various DSLR’s and medium format digital rigs. The winner? Mamiya DL28 by a nose, medium format digital by a resounding margin.
